If your idea of India is limited only to roaming cows, Taj Mahal, Hindu temples and the Ganges River, it's time to expand your impression of India. Visit Goa for a breath of fresh air. Goa is the smallest state in India facing the Arabian Sea in the west coast region of Konkan.

Although Goa is now gaining popularity in the tourism industry, its existence in the Indian territory is still unknown to many. When one speaks of Goa, he speaks of exquisite beaches, stunning architecture and verdant wildlife sanctuaries.

For beach lovers, there are many sun-kissed beaches of fine sand and turquoise waters to choose from. The beaches of Calanguete and Baga draw the most crowds with its various water sports options and vibrant club scenes.

The beaches of Morijim, Asvern and Arambon are sought by those who want to enjoy some peace and quiet. While the beaches of Anjuna and Vagator are a must visit jaunt on Wednesdays for those who can't get enough of the flea market experience.

Goa also boasts of its own World Heritage Site - the Bom Jesus Basilica - where the remains of St. Francis Xavier are kept. Another church of note is the Se Cathedral, which is considered to be the largest church in Asia. In case you wonder why there are several churches in this Indian state, Goa was under the Portuguese rule in the 16th century which explains the noticeable Portuguese influences in Goa's architecture and religion.

The Christian influence left by the conquering Portuguese can still be observed to this day. In fact, one of the major festivals celebrated in Goa is known as the Carnival Festival which is celebrated four days before the Ash Wednesday.

The Hindu influence was not entirely eradicated by the Portuguese. The Mahadeva Temple located at Tambdi Surla that dates back to 1271 still stands to this day. Other temples worth visiting are Shree Manguesh located at Mangueshi and the Shree Damor at Zambaulim.

If you need a break from Goa's beaches, churches and temples, you can find respite from the stunning waterfall of DudhSagar and the several nature resorts in the surrounding area.

Nature lovers will fall in love with what Goa has to offer. It is considered as one of the most bio-diversified locations in the world and two wildlife sanctuaries were established to protect this. The wildlife sanctuaries of Bhagwan Mahavir and Bondla offer visitors the opportunity to experience nature at its best.

Football fans will find passionate comrades in the citizens of Goa. An impressive football stadium at Margao is proof of the Goans love for the sport. In fact, despite the size of this place, it has many football clubs participating in the National Football League.

This just goes to show that Goa has plenty to offer. Any visitor will find an interesting piece of Goa that will make time spent in this charming little region an experience to relish and to revisit over and over again.
