It is easy to get lost in the white sand beaches and azure waters of Jamaica. However, you will be missing much of what this beautiful country has to offer if you do not get past its shorelines. There are several other stunning natural attractions that are begging to be discovered in Jamaica's scarcely visited inlands.

The often ignored Blue Mountain of the island is Jamaica’s hidden playground. Also located in Ochos Rios, right next to Dunn’s, is the Dolphin Cove. The cove itself is a site of breathtaking beauty. It is surrounded by acres of thriving rainforest that seem to shelter it from the rest of the world. Dive right into the pool and watch out for the playful Bottle Nose dolphins. Do get a little cautious though, the cove is also known to get visits from the not so amiable sharks.  Also note that the cove is not for freeloaders; be prepared to pay a hefty admission when planning to visit the area.

Jamaica is also home to one of the most impressive caves in the country. Stretching over 5,000 feet long, the Green Grotto Caves - as they are known - feature remarkable stalagmites, stalactites, natural grottos and a subterranean lake to name just bit of what you will see.

Finally, do not miss out on some of the most beautiful sites in Jamaica: the Blue Lagoon and Reach Falls. The Blue Lagoon needs no introduction at all. It is etched in many people’s mind owing to the same-titled movie. Reach falls, on the other hand, is comprised of a series of mini falls and layers of amazing clear emerald pools. These sights are simply astounding and definitely worth visiting.

What kind of travel you take varies mostly by what you find interesting and fascinating. Some go for sporting trips and visit locations that ideally cater to their sports of choice. There are also those who prefer luxury resorts for a holiday of pampering and laid back recreation.

But, for those who are highly interested in history and lost civilizations, an exploration of ancient ruins and centuries old localities is the trip of choice. When doing cultural travel, take the following tips to get the most of the experience and enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Most cultural sites are usually located at remote places in the tropics or the desert or on high mountain areas. Their unique locations may mean occasional extreme weather and environmental conditions.

Before packing for your trip, look for significant information about your destination - as much as possible so that you can well prepare for any exigencies that may happen along the way. Also, you want to have prior knowledge of the historical background and significance of the place you are visiting. All of this information will give you a deeper insight and appreciation of your destination and better prepare you for the geography, climate and customs of the people you are visiting.

Ancient ruins usually require long hours of walking. A full canteen of water is imperative. Also, stock-up on sunscreen and wear protective long clothing if possible. Sunglasses, hats and big hankies are indispensable when out and about. Also, prepare with good protection against bugs and mosquitoes. You cannot do away with bug sprays if you don’t want patches of red skin and welts to accompany you all throughout your trip. You also need to visit your doctor before leaving for your destination. Inquire about local epidemics and be properly vaccinated for medical conditions in the area.

Cultural and historical travel destinations usually display exquisite handiworks and craftsmanship that you can’t help but get a feel of the people and the region. Restrain yourself. Although the temptation to touch these beautiful pieces of art can be extremely strong - don't, if you want these sites to survive for centuries to come, you want to do your share of protecting them by not contributing to their early deterioration.

Also, keep to the designated pathways and do not take shortcuts along prohibited areas.  It is most likely that you will get offers to buy items that are purportedly portions of the ruins. You should do well to remember that these are nothing more than a dime per dozen fakes. Even if they are authentic, you do not want to support such a blatant disrespect of a revered location or risk committing criminal acts by buying antiquities.

Heritage sites of great religious importance may have some set strict rules on decorum and modesty that you should know beforehand. Before proceeding to the area, inquire from a local if there are certain rules that you should be aware of. Otherwise, you may find out too late that you are not properly dressed and risk being deprived of access to a spectacular site.

Finally, it may do you good to bring along binoculars. Some of these sites are so large, you may not have the energy to explore every inch of it. With binoculars, you don’t have to walk long distances to get a glimpse of certain attractions. You can just sit back, enjoy and soak up the distant sights.

Costa Blanca - Spain

Costa Blanca, a thriving tourist destination in Spain, does not just boast of pristine beaches, beautiful architecture and vibrant nightlife - it is also home to several cities and towns, every single one of which has its own specialty to offer. The region is easy enough to travel by car. The roads are well maintained and the views waiting to be seen and appreciated make traveling more than worth it.

One of the most popular activities in the area – aside from chilling out by the beach – is golfing. You don’t even have to spend much effort looking for a good golf course in Costa Blanca. All it takes is a simple flick of the region’s tourist map and you have it fully marked for your convenience.

For some marine life exposure, board the regular boat to Island de Tabarca just off the shores of Santa Pola and get ready for some serious scuba diving.

If it’s horses you are interested in, you would be glad to know that Costa Blanca also has its share of stables where riders and horse-lovers will have a great time playing and galloping with admirable horses. The entire region is also ideal for bird watching where gulls can be seen from the beaches and dunes while flamingos, herons and egrets are usual sights at the salt lagoons. If you get envious with our feathered friends and wish to join them in the sky, then visit Cabo de Santa Pola and take a heart-pumping plunge in a hang-glider or you can head to Elche and go onboard the hot air balloon for a relatively safer ride.

For Costa Blanca attractions, land animals and marine creatures are exciting to watch and observe in the outstanding zoo and seaworld facility of Mundomar. A more exciting animal safari is also available at Vergel Safari Park complete with roaming tigers and lions; you can also play and swim with sea lions if you are brave enough to get near them. Cuevos de Canelobre is also one interesting site due to the nearby prehistoric cave of skulls at Benidoleig or you can check out the more striking cave of Cova del Rull at Vall d’Ebo for a look at its stunning display of stalagmites and stalactites. Another natural archeological wonder is the rock formation of Pennon de Ifach located in Calpe, it’s a sight to see and definitely worth the visit.

If you wish to spend some of your free time around museums and historical monuments with some shopping breaks in between, then I suggest taking a day trip to the nearby city of Alicante where all these and more are readily available for the eager visitor.

As mentioned earlier, the best way to discover the area is to rent a car and go for a joy ride, that is if you are confident driving in a strange place. You are likely to discover a more endearing part of Costa Blanca during your trip, so it is better to keep an open-ended booking so that you will not have to pay for any surcharges if you wish to transfer to your newly discovered place.

St Petersburg Russia - City of Palaces

There’s no better city to visit for beautiful palaces, impressive gardens and stately museums than St. Petersburg in Russia. It has a collection of interesting places and activities that tourists, travelers and visitors alike will find exciting and riveting.

The city’s nickname, “City of Palaces”, is perfect to describe one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. It has an extensive collection of stunning and colossal architecture. To name a few, there are the majestic Summer and Winter Palaces as well as the grand Menshikov palace.

You will be happy to know that you can freely explore these magnificent edifices because they are now home to the country’s many museums. Calpe is one of the most popular destinations in the region of Costa Blanca. This former sleepy fishing village has seen dramatic transformation over the past few decades as the whole region became a favorite vacation spot of individuals and families from all parts of the world. The serene and quiet atmosphere of the town in bygone days has been exchanged for the pulsating and thriving energy of tourism.

One of the biggest draws that Calpe has for tourists is the delicious Spanish cuisine offered in many of its restaurants. Perhaps, it’s the fresh sea food ingredients that make its dishes stand out. The Old Town is also a must-visit attraction. There is no shortage of sights to see and things to do in this part of the city. Its confines play host to daily local crafts fair during summer and some of its nooks and crannies – especially nearby the Moorish Quarter – are the locations of notable ancient ruins. A survey of the area will take you to the narrow streets of Arabal, along whitewashed houses and past several monuments and museums.

One of the most impressive museums around Calpe is the Museum of Archaeology that is home to countless excavated artifacts dating back to 3rd century.

Calpe is also endowed with stunning natural beauty that makes its beaches the busiest and the most sought-after in the region. Aside from Bulgaria’s historic landmarks and Black Sea Coast, its mountain ranges are also something spectacular and a must visit for travelers to the area. Aside from stunning verdant forests and alpine scenery, the Rila and Pirin mountains are home to the country’s top skiing resorts, exciting hiking trails and diverse wildlife sanctuaries.

Beside dramatic views of snow capped mountains and towering old forests, the mountains of Bulgaria are frequented by a multitude of visitors for the excellent skiing runs. Due to the popularity of skiing in Bulgaria, there are plenty of mountain resorts catering to the sports’ enthusiasts.  One such resort town is Bansko. The area is a popular base for a host of outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and skiing. Aside from the plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun it offers, it is also a sight to see for the remnants of its 10th century architecture and vibrant culture.

You may not think of Bulgaria as your next travel destination. But, let me change your mind. This small country is unlike any other European destination swarming with tourists.

Bulgaria has almost everything that any traveler wishes to see and experience. It has an impressive array of glitzy beachside resorts in the Black Sea Region, its own share of frosted mountains and great skiing locales, beautifully preserved centuries-old towns, great architectural marvels and so much more.

Let's pay close attention to the famous Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria. Aside from the capital city of Sofia, this region is perhaps the most visited destination in the country. The area is not only famous for its sandy beaches and big time resorts but also for its warm spring waters that are believed to have therapeutic effects on those who are lucky enough to bathe in them.

The resort complex of Golden Sands features the best of both worlds. It boasts of 4 km of idyllic beaches and several hot springs. Its historical legacy and old-world splendor made it to the UNESCO World Heritage site. Beautiful Sofia Bulgaria

Sofia is Bulgaria’s capital. The city features some of the finest ancient churches and buildings in Europe. One of the most famous of these structures is St. Sofia Church that dates back, astoundingly, between 4th - 6th century.

The church’s long and colorful history saw occupations and natural disasters one after another. It was converted into a mosque when the city was invaded by the Turks but was again converted back to an orthodox church after a portion of it was destroyed by an earthquake a little short of a half a century later. But it remains standing proud to this day, which earned it the reputation of being a miraculous church.

St. George’s rotunda church is another remarkable ancient edifice in Sofia. It dates back to the 4th century and considered as the oldest building in the area. It is perfectly located in the middle of the ancient ruins of the town of Serdica. The church is a must visit not only for its splendid architecture and long standing history but also for the exquisite medieval frescoes that were inadvertently discovered under its plaster covering.

After your survey of ancient buildings, mix in some modern variation in the form of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is a magnificent five-nave cathedral built in honor of the Russian soldiers who died for Bulgaria’s liberation back in 1878. Check out its stunning frescoes, stained glass windows and impressive stone and wood carvings. Also you may want to check out the church’s crypts. Well, crypts may not exactly be in the list of usual tourist attractions. However, you have to make an exception where Alexander Nevsky is concerned. Its cathedral’s underground is home to some of the finest collections of icon paintings spanning the periods of 9th to 18th century that you wouldn’t want to miss.

To get a deeper insight to the history and traditions of the Balkan Peninsula and its people, the National Ethnographic Museum is a must visit. It has a fascinating collection of artifacts from the 17th – 20th century representing the culture, arts and crafts of the inhabitants of Bulgaria. Its exhibits include a variety of national costumes, musical pieces, jewelry and several works of art. It is also the perfect place for some souvenir shopping.

Sofia is not just about splendid edifices; it also features the imposing but beautiful Vitosha Mountain. It is the oldest national park in the region and abode to various creatures of the wild. More than its natural diversity, it is frequented by both tourists and locals alike for its mineral springs believed to have curative properties.

Another notable point of interest in the area are the piles of gigantic granites believed to have been left behind by drifting glaciers millenniums ago. Vitosha is also home to some fantastic skiing. There are several resorts servicing the area. However, due to its convenient location and easy accessibility, you can move between the capital and Vitosha without breaking a sweat.

You also want to visit the surroundings of Sofia. Bulgaria is a country of rich splendor and each of its regions has something unique to offer. Seaside luxury and excitement is available at the Black Sea Coast while Bulgaria’s mountain ranges are perfect jaunts for hiking and skiing in the comforts of prominent climatic and health resorts.

Art Noveau in Riga Latvia

Riga enjoys a strategic location with the Baltic Sea at its gateway and the Daugaya River at its borders. It is also the capital city of Latvia and a popular tourist destination.  Multitudes of tourists visit every year not only for its natural scenery but for its famed architectural marvels. In fact, it is renowned around the globe for its huge collection of Art Nouveau structures.

When visiting Riga, the first on your list of sights to see should be the Historic Centre of the city. The place is so full of interesting and impressive structural royalties that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drop by for a visit and you can expect a rewarding and gratifying day of sight-seeing.

As I have always done in the past, I make it a point to get a bird’s eye view of the place I am visiting. It is the best way to get a good mental picture of the whole city. The best place to do this in Riga is at the soaring tower of St. Peter’s Church.

Although it was completed way back in 1746 (the original foundation of the church was placed in 1209) you will be happy to know that the tower is now equipped with a working elevator to easily transport visitors to the summit. You can conveniently enjoy a spectacular overlooking panorama of the surrounding areas without breaking a sweat. You may also find it interesting to note that St. Peter Church is believed to be one of the highest wood buildings in all of Europe.

Next in line is the Riga Castle which is located right on the embankment of Daugaya. This impressive building dates back to 1330, although it was only completed sometime in the 15th century. Perhaps due to its remarkable design, it was chosen to be the seat of the Latvian government since 1938. To fully appreciate the castle and get a glimpse of the country’s history, a visit to several museums in the vicinity is recommended.

You may also want to take a look at the largest medieval church in the entire Baltic territory – the Riga Church that dates back to 12th century. Aside from its size and long history, its extraordinary pipe organ is also something to see and hear, if possible.

For a unique museum experience, check out the Motor Museum where you can see a fascinating collection of classic vehicles and retro motorcycles. Stalin’s armored limousine complete with his wax figure is also part of the exhibit.

For some open-air jaunts, visit the tourist favorite Mezapark, also known as the forest park where you can enjoy a quiet picnic or simply chill out in its gardens. The area is also home to Riga Zoo where the whole family can have a great time with more than 3000 animals who make this zoo their home. Just a short distance away is an amusement park to complete your day of fun and adventure. If you happen to be in the area in the month of July, it’s worth taking part in the merriment of Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

Alpine lakes, white capped mountains, secluded vineyard chalets and more await you in stunning Granada, Switzerland. The city is located along the shoreline of Geneva Lake, a setting perfectly idyllic for people seeking a beautiful locale to relax and rejuvenate.

The neighborhood surrounding Geneva Lake is the ideal base when visiting the city. There is an abundance of wooden chalets in the area that you can rent for the duration of your stay. What is best about these chalets is the dramatic commanding view of the lake and the adjacent vineyards it offers.

If you are an artist, you can’t help but be inspired by the scenic vista. So, better have your canvas and easel on the ready, you just don’t know when the spark of creativity will strike you when in Geneva. Moreover, you are easily within driving distance from mountain ski resorts, grand palaces and magnificent churches.

One impressive example of Geneva’s splendid edifice is the St. Peter’s Cathedral that has been standing in its regal glory since the 12th century. It is a confluence of several architectural styles as those of Gothic, Romanesque and Neoclassical. St. Peter’s north tower is also the best place to get a fantastic overlooking view of the city.

There are also several impressive museums in Geneva. One of which is the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum where you’ll find various expressions of art. One of the more remarkable Geneva sights is the Jet d’Eau or the Water Fountain. It is one of the grandest and tallest in the world, projecting about 140 meters at 200 km per hour. You have to see it during the evening because it looks fantastic with colorful illumination as the background.

Finally, Geneva is not all about beautiful structures and impressive cultural exhibitions. It also features the tourist favorite Plaine de Plainpalais or the Flea Market. It is buzzing with excited energy especially during Wednesdays and Saturdays. Of course, glacier sight-seeing is a must-do when in Alaska. Wait until you see the colossal and majestic whites, it’s almost a guarantee that you will be leaving in awe of such an enchanting view. What makes the experience even more special is the contrast of the verdant green forest trail you will be passing and the pristine white expanse once the massive floating ice comes within sight.

An exploration of the forest will take you along scenic trails, beautiful waterfalls and charming small villages. If you go just a little further, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover a Military Museum in the middle of the Forest.

Stavanger has recently attained quite a reputation for being a tourist favorite in Norway. This is not entirely surprising considering the picturesque lay-out of the city and the various cultural sites and attractions it has in store for its visitor. Imagine a charming old town rising above a picturesque harbor and you have just created a picture perfect depiction of the city.

Stavanger’s Old Town is the city’s cultural center. Its cobbled stone streets, white wooden houses and overlooking views of the Vågen harbour taken together make a stunning sight to behold. It is also home to Canning Museum, worth visiting if you want a deeper insight to the once major industry in the country.

There are several other museums that are worth visiting. There is the Norwegian Petroleum Museum that displays advanced technological exhibits complete with interactive activities that’ll keep sight-seers pleasantly involved.

Finally, the Rogaland Art Museum is also worth seeing for its collection of paintings from 18th century up to the present.

For an afternoon of relaxation, head to Mosvangen Park. It is a perfect place to have a picnic and be treated to stunning views of the lake populated with many ducks and geese. It has also a well-maintained footpath for lazy strolls around the park. You may also want to visit the Stavanger Cathedral believed to have been built way back in 1125. It is considered to be Norway’s oldest intact medieval cathedral.

If you want to experience what it’s like to live during the Iron-Age, then head on to the Iron-Age Farm. It is a living museum complete with period-dressed inhabitants and period appropriate ornamentation. The facility also offers scenic views of North-Jæren and the Hafrsfjord.

Stavanger is also a perfect hiking destination. A short two-hour drive will take you to Lysefjord where the 1,000 meter high plateau of Kjerag is located. If you are not afraid of heights, you can walk right to the edge and feel the adrenalin rush of being a few feet away from a straight plummet towards oblivion.

If hiking the heights of Kjerag is too physically exhausting for you, then the Preikestolen or the Pulpit Rock is an easier alternative. It stands on 600 meters above sea level but offers the same spectacular panorama. It can be a little crowded in Preikestolen so be ready to find your own special spot where you can fully enjoy the stunning view. You can also take a boat to the Lysefjord to view the mountains if you want to change your viewing perspective.

Venice of the North - Bruges Belgium

Bruges is a perfectly preserved medieval town in the Western-Flanders region of Belgium. Its idyllic setting of cobbled stone streets, 16th century architecture and winding canals made it a favorite romantic destination in Europe. In fact, it is considered by many as the most beautiful city in this part of the world. 

Moving around is as uncomplicated as going to your local park because it is small enough to be explored on foot. If you want to glam it up, you can easily hail a charming horse-drawn carriage. But, if you want to do it the traditional touristy way, there is also an hourly City Bus Tour waiting at the Market Square. Despite its small egg-shaped size, the city is a treasure trove of quaint and interesting attractions that will keep its visitor occupied for hours.

Bruges takes pride in the beauty of its cathedrals and churches. The Basilica of the Holy Blood is one major attraction. It features the 11th century St. Basil's Chapel and a museum housing the bejeweled gold and silver Holy Blood Shrine. Other famous cathedrals include the Our Lady's Church, whose tower is one of the most prominent features of the city's skyline. The Jerusalem Church is also worth checking out for its fine-looking stained glass windows.

For a birds eye view of this picture perfect medieval village, climb up the 272 foot-high Belfry Museum. It is believed to have been built way back in the 13th century. But, more than its rich history, what is most exciting for me is getting a good look at the internal mechanism of the Belfry Tower clock. It's not just a good photo opportunity but also an interesting piece of artwork to look at. Along the way to the top, you will also pass by a carillon of 47 bells. If you get excited with just one tower bell, what more with more than 3 dozens of them?

City halls may seem like boring places to visit, but not in Bruges. It dates back to 1376 and features remarkable workmanship. Take time to visit its gothic council chamber and once you are in the middle of the room, look up and be amazed with its stunning high ceiling adorned with elaborate medieval carvings. If you are interested in governance and things like that, you can head on to the adjoining chamber where government documents and some pieces of art are placed on exhibit.

If you are interested in local crafts, visit the Lace Centre at Peperstraat. It is a museum dedicated to Bruges most celebrated lace-making industry. You can get acquainted with the process of this delicate craft and how it evolved throughout the years. Of course, you can buy some of the exquisite handiwork if you can't resist the temptation of a good purchase! 

Finally, Bruges is not called Venice of the North without reason. Take advantage of its meandering canals and the picturesque scenery along the way. There are plenty of tour boats in the area. You can choose one with a multi-lingual guide if you want more insight to the city's history or you can do away with a guide and just enjoy the scenic view in peace and quiet.

Thinking of a Mediterranean vacation? I know choosing a destination in this part of the world is far from easy. There are just too many attractive alternatives available. But, if you are like me and get excited with both history and natural beauty then Cyprus should be your obvious choice.

This island-republic is located right smack in the Mediterranean Sea. Its strategic location made it not only a recipient of the spectacular gifts of nature but also a significant site for momentous historical events. Whether you are looking for an exciting day trip to ancient edifices, a relaxing time at the beach or an interesting look at time gone by, Cyprus has all this and more in store for you.

Many are drawn to the shores of this Mediterranean island because of its idyllic beaches. Sun-kissed powdery white sand coastlines together with readily accessible water sports make Cyprus a hit among the young and the young at heart.

If you seek adventure, the beaches in Kyrenia and Lefke are ideal for you. These areas are teeming with water adventure providers offering adrenalin pumping pursuits. Of course, not to be missed is the UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Pafos, known as the Tomb of the Kings. These ancient stone carvings are not only impressive for a long history dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman times but also a visual treat and a source of bewilderment for the observers; certainly, worth taking a look at.

The Lefkosia region is also a favorite tourist destination for its ancient Medieval Walls complete with moats and heart-shaped bastions. It also provides a good opportunity for history buffs to check out the period's fortification strategies and construction techniques.

There are also several museums all over Cyprus. But, if you want to see something different other than old shards of vases, ancient tools and scraps of metal, then take a cue from the crowd visiting the most popular of all museums - Agia Napaís Marine Life Museum.

Exhibits here include interesting artifacts of marine life discovered throughout the ages.  In addition, you can check out the display of works of art, porcelain and embroideries at the Decorative Art Museum. Of course, if you want to take a look at good old archaeological collections, I suggest the Museum of Nicosia where you will find exhibits dating back to 7500-3900 B.C. and the Museum of Archeology and Natural Sciences for their collection of artifacts from the early Stone Age.

Many of us can't get enough of medieval old towns. Aside from being visually enticing, there's a unique romantic atmosphere that seem to pervade in its every corner that many travelers, like me, find irresistible. One such medieval legacy is the capital town of Lithuania, known as the city of Vilnius.

Vilnius is home to the largest surviving medieval old town in Northern Europe. Aptly named the Old Town, it made the UNESCO World Heritage List for its rich historic and aesthetic value. There are more than a thousand centuries old structures, houses and churches to be discovered and marveled at in the area. I suggest taking lazy strolls along its ancient streets and allow its old-world charm to pleasantly transport you back in time.

First, it's nice to get your bearing of the city's expanse and lay out. One place for that in Vilnius is the TV Tower. It stands at 1071 feet and ranks as the highest structure in Lithuania. Don't worry, you will not be taking the stairs to reach the summit, it comes fully equipped with high-speed elevators. You may also want to visit several interesting other museums in the area such as the Lithuanian Energy Museum, the Railway Museum and the Applied Art Museum.

Of course, castles are always part of the medieval era. The Gedyminas Castle, standing sentry on a hill, is worth visiting for its historical importance in the country's independence. The Trakai Castle, on the other hand, is a picture right out of fairy tale books with its tranquil lakes and colorful houses which lovers and honeymooners will find perfectly idyllic.  

Vilnius may be a city famous for its medieval town but it remains updated with contemporary entertainment. There are plenty of bars and pubs in the area that offer great venues for all night partying and dancing. There are also several selections of cafes and restaurants for those who prefer quiet conversations with friends. Shopping is also very much alive in the city.

As a capital of Lithuania, Vilnius is home to several shopping malls and upscale niche shops that shopaholics will find extremely enticing and delightful.

Thinking of visiting the capital city of Canada? Ottawa has plenty to offer its visitors. It may not be buzzing with hectic energy like other metropolitan cities, but it possesses a relaxed atmosphere and idyllic charm that gives much pleasure to guests who intend to just unwind and chill out. Also, be on the lookout for the daily free concert performances offered by the Dominion Carilloneur.  If you happen to be in the area during Christmas season, you can't miss the magnificent exhibition of thousands upon thousands of Christmas lights stunningly displayed across the hill.

Situated just minutes from the Parliament Hill is the 361 square kilometer expanse of the Gatineau Park. It features various nature trails that wind through forests, lakes and scenic viewpoints. During warm months, visitors can choose from various exciting activities such as cycling, hiking, swimming and camping while cross-country and downhill skiing are the favorite activities during winter.

For the most picturesque scenery, I highly recommend taking a look at Canada's extraordinary geological formations, the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands, from Champlain Lookout at Eardely Escarpment. To those who are working on a budget, you will be glad to know that admission to Gatineau Park is free of charge.

To those who want a taste of Canadian shopping, Byward Market is the place to go. It is one of the largest public markets in the country. It offers almost everything, from fresh produce to signature fashion pieces. There are also plenty of al fresco cafes and gourmet restaurants in the area. Watch for secluded cobblestone squares to experience the old-world market charm.

If you want to experience the full bloom of Spring in Ottawa, visit during the Canadian Tulip Festival and be treated to the colorful display of tulips in all their glorious splendor. Make sure to join the more than 600,000 visitors in a parade of spectacular Spring color along the Tulip Route.
